In episode 273, I’m joined by Fiona Mort, head of 1800RESPECT, the national helpline for sexual assault, domestic and family violence. Fiona discusses the barriers and challenges women must overcome in their journey to escape domestic violence, often for them and their children. Fiona also explains how lack of understanding and seemingly innocent questions such as “why doesn’t she just leave” underestimate the complexities of domestic violence and also shifts the blame from the perpetrator to the victims. We also discuss how the community can support the services required to help women and children in need.

This interview was conducted as part of my work with Vinnies SA, whom I am proud to work with and support as an Ambassador for the CEO Sleepout. It contains content that some listeners may find triggering. If you or anyone you know needs counselling or support services, 1800RESPECT is accessible 24 hours a day.
