Concerns are rising in Turkey ahead of the nationwide local elections on March 31, as disinformation and fake media created through artificial intelligence (AI) are becoming more prevalent. Manipulated images and videos are being used by some politicians for electoral advantage, raising fears about media manipulation in an election where the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) is aiming to retake cities won by the opposition in 2019. The director of fact-checking project Teyit warns that "cheap fake" videos are more common than AI-created disinformation and pose a significant threat. The Turkish government passed a law last year criminalizing the dissemination of false information to combat disinformation.
