Citizen Kane was the obvious first choice, as Mank is about the writing of that classic film, and of course, we picked our favorite from director, David Fincher, which is another perfect companion piece. In episode 1, we researched all the relevant connections, settings, and history of Citizen Kane that will apply to the story of Mank. In episode, 2, we researched all we could about the storytellers, Jack & David Fincher and told their bios and filmographies up to The Social Network and how Mank was nearly made in the late 1990’s. But in both of these episodes, we discuss and derive all the connections of story and theme amongst these 3 films, and it’s staggering how closely related they all are. Something else great about this miniseries though is that each and every episode exists well on its own merits. For this is a retrospective on one of our absolute favorite films of all time, a new classic, and there’s so much to discuss and dissect about this eerily prophetic masterpiece. So as always, you get a spoiler warning before we get into the plot. But because there’s a bit more elevated discussion on the overall, we do spend most of our time in non-spoiler territory. If you’re enjoying this miniseries, do stay tuned for our film study on Mank, coming up next, and then our Fincher Awards Show. We hope to have guests for both of those, and we look forward to finishing this series in style. Otherwise, and as we always say, do let us know your thoughts.
