In this special episode recorded for York Design Week we explore the impact of social, political and economic turmoil on creativity and artistic movements.

We will discuss pivotal moments from history and their impact on creative practices spanning music, culture and visual art. We will also explore how the current pandemic is impacting and affecting the work and practice of artists today.

Dr Desmond Clarke is an artist who works with generative and algorithmic processes to explore the intersection of the natural and numeric.

Dr Stef Conner is a lecturer the University of York. Stef began her career as pianist and backing singer in the Northumbrian folk band The Unthanks. Since then, Stef has carved a niche for herself in the misty borderlands between the classical and traditional music worlds, combining the intense emotional sincerity of traditional song with jazz-infused contemporary harmony and a palette of techniques drawn from the study of ancient music and poetry
