The Ni Hao Ma Debate
- Early last week MasterChef contestant Sarah Tiong was doing a round of media interviews after being eliminated from the show
- She then posted on her Instagram calling out Triple M after the host Matt Jonsen started the interview by greeting Sarah with ‘Ni Hao Ma’, which is of course is how you say ‘hello’ in Mandarin
- Sarah said that the greeting didn’t go to air but Jonsen proceeded to ask ‘Oh wait, would it be ‘Lei Ho Ma?’, which is cantonese
- Sarah said she was uncomfortable and shocked and ended the call and said it was racist, insensitive and tone deaf and asked the station to ‘do better’
- This debate has the Asian community divided with some saying Sarah was being too sensitive and others agreeing saying it is racist
What are your thoughts on this? Should we view someone greeting us Ni Hao Ma as language appreciation?
What makes you Pufferfish?
- Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby who released critically acclaimed Nanette has returned with a new Netflix special called Douglas
- In the show, she talks about what makes her instantly outraged, even at the mention of it. Some things that makes her blow up like a puffer fish are: paleo diets and people Americanised their language
- What makes you pufferfish?
Making a show for white Australia
- Big Brother returned for the first time in 6 years and the first 3 contestants eliminated from the show were people of colour
- Fijian-Australian Laura was first to go, followed by ‘confident and loud’ Chinese Australian housemate Allan Liang and then Korean-Australian SooBong Hwang.
- People of Colour contestants are chosen to be loud and have strong personalities whilst cauasian contestants are ‘everyday joes’
- Caucasian Examples: Zoe is a caring teacher and mum of 2, Ian loves nature and science, Chad is a hot tradie
- PoC examples: Allan is the loud Asian guy who’s in it to win it.
- Laura is pro-black, vegan and doesn’t care what people think
- Angela (who is Kenyan) is unapologetic with strong opinions
- Do you think that producers are casting PoC for entertainment value or for relability? Who’s the last Asian contestant in reality tv (excluding MasterChef) that you liked?
