It's felt like a long time coming, then last Friday became official. The Lakers have finally parted ways with Marc Gasol. He, along with a 2024 second round pick and cash, were sent to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for the rights to Wang Zhelin, who's not expected to join the team anytime soon (or ever). A homecoming on paper only for Gasol, he's expected to get waived and remain in Spain with his family. It's a strange ending to what can only be described as a very strange season for the Lakers and El Spaniard 2.0. So where does this leave the Lakers? It could mean a return to the style that won a title in 2020, with shot-blocking lob threats at center, and Anthony Davis starting at power forward. It could also mean Davis shifting to the center full-time or something close, with Howard or Jordan as his backup, and the Lakers playing smaller in general. The rumor mill has presented AD as open towards playing center more often. That would make things simpler, but will it need to be seen before it is believed? So how much will Gasol be missed? It depends on how much you value his skill sets on both sides of the ball. There have been signs that Frank Vogel, right or wrong, didn't covet them as last season progressed. The optionality Gasol provides doesn't matter if the Lakers weren't planning to use it, anyway. And finally, Gasol's soured relationship with the Lakers seemed to coincide with the arrival of Andre Drummond off the buyout market. Did the Lakers front office mishandle this situation from a chemistry and personality standpoint? Are there lessons to be learned for this season, given how the roster seems set up to explore the buyout market again?
