Russell Westbrook was in the building. That's the headline from Tuesday in El Segundo, when newly acquired guard Patrick Beverley was introduced to the local media. He gave Pat Bev a towel (Beverley was finishing a workout when he started answering questions) and the two bro-hugged awkwardly when it was done. But he was there, and Westbrook has been around a lot through the summer. Is he doing the right stuff because he's reached a place of understanding? A spot of zen where he truly understands what's required for him to play in the way Darvin Ham will demand? Out of spite to pay back those who have criticized and written him off?
The former would be better, but at least as it pertains to Westbrook, the latter might work for a while, too.
Ham talked about the way those two could be on the court together, too. There's no reason Beverley and Westbrook can't work as a backcourt... if they play defense. Which means, "if Russ plays defense," because at the least we know Beverley will be working hard on that side of the floor. So what's the threshold Westbrook has to hit in order to get the kind of playing time he wants, and believes he deserves? That'll be one of the great early season questions, assuming Russ opens the season on the roster.
What about their on-court fit? Beverley is optimistic. Does he have cause?
Finally, Beverley showed his signature edge and confidence in a few different spots over the course of his answers to media questions. A couple clips even ginned up some chatter on social media... but was anything he said out of bounds? Was it the right kind of hard-nosed attitude, or signs of trouble to come?
