When you think of the world's wine superpowers, France, Spain, or Portugal might come to mind. But for historian Jennifer Regan-Lefebvre, Britain should be added to that list (it sounds paradoxical, we know). But it's not in Britain where we find this power, instead, Jennifer argues British wine began abroad, as wine was central to the British Empire.
In settler-colonies including Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, vineyards were among the first things to emerge after imperial dispossession. Jennifer's compiled this complex and at times dark history in her new book, Imperial Wine: How the British Empire Made Wine's New World.
