February 3rd, 1959...encapsulated in song as "The Day The Music Died." The truth is always deeper (and sometimes darker) than the manner in which old school media portrayed major news stories. Given the difference in media cycles in the 1950's versus today, it might be hard to understand how slowly news traveled, and how few details were shared by news reports of the day, The media didn't know how much they didn't know.
That's especially true in this case, the tragic airplane death of Rock n' Rollers Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. Richardson, aka The Big Bopper. The tragic crash had immediate impact, but the long-term effect, in its aftermath, has grown through the decades.
