The entire game turned on one play. Edmonton Oilers had played a decent first period and held a 1-0 lead early in the second period when the roof caved in. Then Colorado’s Ryan Graves stepped into Alex Chiasson with a crushing check that left the big Oiler crumpled on the ice, seconds later Adam Larsson tapped T.J. Tynan with his elbow, and just like that the Oilers were shorthanded for five minutes and down two men for the rest of the night. The Avs were energized, the Oilers dispirited, and from then on it was an utterly one-sided mismatch in favour of Colorado. Mikko Koskinen and the penalty-killers did manage to hold off the extended powerplay including a full two minutes of 3-on-5, but the rest of the team was never again able to seize even a semblance of composure let alone control. David Staples and Bruce McCurdy of the Cult of Hockey dig in.
