Doctor Sleep is based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Stephen King, which is a sequel to King’s 1977 novel The Shining. This movie – directed by Mike Flanagan, also serves as the sequel to the 1980 film adaption of The Shining, directed by Stanley Kubrick. Makes sense? Set several decades after the events of the original story, this movie combines elements of the novels and the Kubrick film, in a product that is written, directed, and edited by Flanagan. A grown-up Danny Torrance, who possesses psychic abilities known as the shining, struggles with his childhood trauma and struggles with alcoholism. Dan Torrance (Ewan McGregor) remains traumatized by the sinister events that occurred at the Overlook Hotel when he was a child. His hope for a long peaceful existence soon becomes shattered when he meets Abra (Kyliegh Curran), a teen who shared his extrasensory gift of the “shine”. Together, they form an unlikely alliance to battle the True Knot, led by Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson), a cult whose members try to feed off the shine of innocents to become immortal.
