This is Disney’s latest attempt at bringing one of their animated classics to a modern audience. Twenty-five years after the original, we get this live-action (or photo-realistic computer-animated – we’re not really sure what to call it) remake of The Lion King. Directed by Jon Favreau, The Lion King, with a mostly new cast of voice actors (James Earl Jones as Mufasa being the only returning voice), takes us back to that African kingdom of lion and once again follows Simba (JD McCrary), a young lion who is to succeed his father as King of the Pride Lands. You know this story. After Simba’s paternal uncle Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor) murders Mufasa, Simba is manipulated into thinking he was responsible and flees into exile. Upon growing up unconventionally with a meerkat and warthog duo – Timon (Billy Eichner) and Pumbaa (Seth Rogen), Simba (Donald Glover) is given some valuable perspective from his childhood friend, Nala (Beyoncé Knowles-Carter), and the wise Rafiki (John Kani), before returning to challenge Scar to end his tyranny and take his place as the rightful King in the great circle of life.
