“I was ashamed I liked the music I liked. I didn't even tell people I played guitar when I moved to LA. And then I just let go...” We want to be Suzy Shinn when we grow up. At 26, she’s a rock star (literally). This two-time Grammy-nominated recording engineer, songwriter and producer is best known for her work with Weezer, Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy, Dua Lipa, Katy Perry, Tom Morello, and many more. When she was just 21 Suzy co-wrote and produced "Catch 22" by Australian rapper Illy which won the 2018 ARIA Urban work of the year. And while it might sound like it, Rivers Cuomo definitely did NOT write a song about 2021’s album Van Weezer (which she produced). But Suzy didn’t always fit in. Not because she grew up half-Korean in Wichita (far from this opera forevermore). If anything, her white mom wanted her to embrace the heritage of a Korean father who was no longer there. Even after moving to LA, Suzy’s longtime love of rock and roll had her feeling like she was faking it. Her power chords weren’t “smart people music.” But as we all have to discover, Suzy found that fitting in was never about listening to others, but about letting go and listening to herself...
