Warner Bros. Pictures released Superman: The Movie to theaters on December 15, 1978; grossing $300.2 million worldwide. Richard Donner directed the comic book thriller which starred Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, and Gene Hackman. Superman: The Movie Movie Summary This week’s movie begins on the planet Krypton, a planet made of crystal. Jor-El, the biological dad of Superman, is hard at work sentencing three bad guys to life in a mirror. We know they are bad guys because they wear black, while everyone else on Krypton wears white. How did they expect to get away with anything with those clever disguises. After sentencing the trio to hard time as the changing room mirror in Lane Bryant, Jor-El tries to convince the leaders of Krypton to flee the planet because their sun will explode. They refuse, causing Jor-El to send his son, the infant Kal-El, or Superman as we know him, to the primitive planet of Earth. During one of the many exposition scenes, we learn that Earth’s yellow sun and Kal-El’s dense molecular structure give him superhuman powers, and a distinct advantage over the people of Earth. So, off Kal-El goes into the wild blue yonder, and boom goes the dynamite that was Krypton. Kal-El and our three baddies are the only surviving people from Krypton. But more of that in Part II. We jump ahead three years where Kal-El finally makes it to earth…and ladies and gentlemen, that has to be one rank diaper that Jonathan and Martha Kent find on our wayward infant when he crash lands in front of them on the flatlands of the Midwest. The next half hour summarizes what it took 10 seasons of Smallville to do, mainly that our hero, now called Clark Kent, grows up to be lamest, boy-scout superhero that ever existed.
