Setting is often a throwaway idea for a lot of storytellers. Stories sometimes set in a particular place because “why not?” There’s no rhyme or reason. The story just needs a setting. And for many stories that’s okay. But being purposeful about your setting can enrich your world. Today, we talk about our experiences with setting and how think about our setting as its own character within our stories.   We talk about:   When it’s important to have a map. How “controlling the camera” allows you to be vague about specifics you don’t know. Setting as character. How we developed our setting in The Dream Engine. When setting becomes a distraction. How Breaking Bad’s setting added flavor to the series. Are you wondering what the ever-growing demand for superb storytelling skills means for your future? Check out our latest interview as Johnny and Sean dive deep into that question in “Storytelling Is the Future: How to Build On Your Self-Publishing Success.” Download the interview from the info box or show notes in YouTube or head over to https://www.sterlingandstone.net/future.
