So the Lakers, hopefully with LeBron James in the lineup, once again are in San Antonio to play the Spurs, the back end of a rare road-road series with the same team. Whether James plays or not (and the Lakers will certainly be cautious with him, because he's LeBron and the Spurs have lost 18 games in a row) the big question is whether the Lakers will have learned anything from Wednesday's win.
Because Wednesday's win was as annoying as any the Lakers have had in a while. Allowing an 18 point lead to shrink down to 13 with around four minutes left... then 10 with two minutes to play, and then somehow the Lakers needed some real San Antonio incompetence to hold on in the end.
Anthony Davis was awesome, but the team's execution suffered in a massive way in those final moments, with mistakes all over the place, whether mental or physical or both.
The mark of a good team is to not repeat mistakes.
Meanwhile, Lakers fans continue to be annoyed by Darvin Ham's lineup choices. The combinations, the decisions to play one guy over another, all of it. One of the big ones? Rui Hachimura doesn't seem to be able to get as many minutes as some think he should, or as many fans would like. But why? Is it a trust thing? Is there something about his defense? The fit with other lineups? Is Ham trying to maximize his positives while minimize his negatives?
On the one hand, figuring out how to do that with role players is a critical job for any coach. But then again, are we sure Hachimura is a typical role player?
Plus, how much does Ham's sideline demeanor impact the way fans look at him?
