To the surprise of many, the Arizona State Sun Devils football program rolled out a more than competent defense in 2023. When looking at their 2022 counterparts, it was a night and day difference, with defensive coordinator Brian Ward at the forefront of all the positive changes. However, some of the key pieces to that unit, like B.J. Green, Jordan Clark, and Travion Brown are no longer with the program for various reasons. The Sun Devils have lost more than a handful of players defensively this offseason and will need guys to step up into bigger roles. There are some very important players returning, however, and they get their flowers here. Shamari Simmons will have a large role to take on as the leader of this defense in 2024, as will other veterans like Ed Woods, Caleb McCullough, and Anthonie Cooper. Some breakout players like Prince Dorbah and Clayton Smith will look to keep the pass rush moving, and youngsters like C.J. Fite and Tate Romney also have big shoes to fill.
