Submit ReviewWell, well, well. The San Francisco Giants have largely been vindicated after the Mets balked following Carlos Correa's physical. A week ago today, the Giants told Scott Boras that they wouldn't honor their 13-year, $350 million agreement with Carlos Correa after his physical raised an unexpected issue. Less than 12 hours later, Correa had agreed to a 12-year, $315 million deal with the Mets that was also pending a physical. Many expected the physical would be passed, but instead, it has been reported that the Mets flagged the same issue as the Giants: something wrong with Correa's lower right leg.
Boras essentially gave the SF Giants one day post-physical to decide whether or not they would honor their original agreement. The deadline came and went, and the Giants said they would not. At that point, Boras began talking to other teams, and quickly found a willing buyer in the Mets. Boras was operating under the stated belief that Correa was fully healthy, and the Mets seemed to believe that. But their physical turning up the same issue clears the Giants and seems to paint Boras in a pretty poor light.
Either Boras knew about the issue and lied about it, or he didn't know about the issue at all, which is a huge blunder for a such a high-profile client. The Giants' main mistake appears to be agreeing to have the physical one day before a scheduled press conference. But other than that, they seemingly acted in good faith and just ran into an unexpected medical concern. Now that the Mets have that same concern, Correa is likely back on the market. If the Mets won't honor their original agreement—and the fact that five days have passed post-physical suggests that they won't—all bets are off and other teams are in play. It's unclear whether the Giants are even interested with the knowledge of what's wrong with his leg, but if they are still interested, they could be very much still in play to sign Correa. His contract may end up looking quite a bit different that the original deals with the Giants and Mets.
