Where would the 2023 San Francisco Giants be without Wilmer Flores? For the last six weeks, Flores has essentially been the SF Giants' offense. The Giants' decision to extend Wilmer Flores for three years, $16.5M is looking like a stroke of genius. Flores is having a career year in his fourth season with the Giants, so much so that he's essentially already been worth the entirety of the contract. The third year of the deal is actually a $3.5M player option, but if Flores declines it, it becomes an $8.5M team option.

But the other moves the SF Giants made between the end of the 2022 season and the start of the 2023 season haven't worked out so well. Michael Conforto and Mitch Haniger simply haven't made the impact that was hoped or expected. Conforto has struggled to hit for any kind of impact power, and Haniger was ineffective before breaking his forearm and missing a bunch of time. Other signings like Ross Stripling and Sean Manaea also haven't been great so far. Luke Jackson and Taylor Rogers have mostly been good.

AJ Pollock left last night's game with side discomfort. Marco Luciano was then promtly removed from the River Cats game. It is likely that Luciano joins the active roster, but it's not clear if he will get more regular playing time this time around. Another player to keep an eye on going forward is Wade Meckler, who's now hitting at the minors' highest level. Meckler looks like someone who will really contribute with the bat, which is what the Giants need desperately right now.
