The San Francisco Giants didn't just lose to the Los Angeles Dodgers last night—they were embarrassed, again, by their rivals. The Giants-Dodgers rivalry has been one-sided since the Dodgers defeated the SF Giants in the NLDS in 2021. Last night, the San Francisco Giants lost 9-1 despite having their ace, Logan Webb, on the mound.

A couple of trends have emerged for the Giants. Their strikeout rate as an offense is the highest by far of any major league team. The good news is that it's likely not going to stay that way, since several players are simply striking out at a much higher rate than their career averages, and we should expect them to regress toward the mean. Also, the Giants have managed to be among the league leaders in key offensive metrics like wRC+, wOBA, OBP, SLG, and ISO despite the high K rate. However, in addition to the strikeouts, the run scoring has been very inconsistent.

On the pitching side, the only things holding the Giants back are a high HR/FB ratio and a low left-on-base percentage—two metrics that are slow to stabilize, particularly the HR/FB ratio. The Giants led the majors with the fewest home runs allowed in each of the last two seasons, but this year so far they're near the top. That very likely won't last, and their other numbers (like K%, BB%, and GB%) look strong.
