Two cases attempt to employ the contentious “gay panic” defense to wildly different results. After two hookups go sideways, a gay man and transgender woman are murdered. But what is the difference between these two killings and the trials that came after? Why are we still using the "gay panic” defense in the court of law? And is using this defense its own type of hate crime if it further persecutes members of the LGBTQ community?
