In 1984, Ghostbusters not only released to be a blockbuster hit, but became a cultural phenomenon, launching a multi-billion-dollar multimedia franchise.
As we celebrate its 31st anniversary and eagerly wait for the new sequel (which was delayed due to the Covid-19 Pandemic), we rewind to when we were first introduced to proton packs, ecto slime, the Stay Puft the Marshmallow Man, and the concept of crossing the streams.
Directed by Ivan Reitman and written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, Ghostbusters is the supernatural comedy film about a trio of eccentric parapsychologists who start a ghost-catching business in New York City. After the members of a team of scientists, Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), and Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), lose their cushy positions at a university in New York City, they decide to set up shop in an old firehouse and become “Ghostbusters” to wage a high-tech battle with the supernatural for money.
Their possessed former client, Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver), and her love-smitten neighbour, Louis Tully (Rick Moranis), are up to something. Faced against the ancient shape-shifting demon, Gozer the Destructor, the Ghostbusters stumble upon a gateway to another dimension, a doorway that will release evil upon the city. Joined by their newest recruit, Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson), the Ghostbusters must now save New York from complete destruction.
