With the new photo-realistic computer-animated remake of the horizon, it is time… to look at the original Disney animated classic that also celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary – The Lion King. Directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, The Lion King is the thirty-second Disney Animated feature film, which takes us to an African kingdom of lions and follows Simba (Jonathan Taylor Thomas), a young lion who is to succeed his father, Mufasa (James Earl Jones), as King of the Pride Lands. After Simba’s paternal uncle Scar (Jeremy Irons) murders Mufasa, Simba is manipulated into thinking he was responsible and flees into exile. Upon growing up unconventionally with a meerkat and warthog duo – Timon (Nathan Lane) and Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella), Simba (Matthew Broderick) is given some valuable perspective from his childhood friend, Nala (Moira Kelly), and the wise Rafiki (Robert Guilaume), before returning to challenge Scar to end his tyranny and take his place as the rightful King in the great Circle of Life. Rewind to celebrate the vibrant colours of the animation sequences, a larger than life combination of characters and voice work, original songs written and produced by composer Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice and a score by Hans Zimmer – but it wasn’t without several controversies.
