Return to that familiar bench where Tom Hanks recounted several decades of the life of a slow-witted but kind-hearted man from Alabama. Rewind to 1994 as we take a look at the world through the eyes of Forrest Gump.
Directed by Robert Zemeckis and based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Winston Groom, Forrest Gump follows a man who witnesses and unwittingly influences several defining historical events during the twentieth century in United States. Lower-than-average-intelligence Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) has never thought of himself as disadvantaged, and thanks to his supportive mother (Sally Field), he leads anything but a restricted life.
Whether dominating on the gridiron as a college football star, meeting the president of the United States, fighting in Vietnam, becoming a Ping Pong champion, meeting the president (again), or captaining a shrimp boat, Forrest inspires people with his childlike optimism. But the one person Forrest cares about the most turns out to be the most difficult to save – his childhood love, the sweet but troubled Jenny (Robin Wright).
This film questions the idea of destiny and uses a floating feather (accompanied by a suite by Alan Silvestri) as a metaphor for life – do we each have a destiny, or are we all just floating around accidental-like on a breeze? Or maybe as Forrest suggests, it’s both.
