Directed by Gil Junger, 10 Things I Hate About You is a loose modernization of William Shakespeare’s late-16th century comedy The Taming of the Shrew, retold in a late-1990s American high school setting. With an ensemble cast of up-and-coming young stars, this romantic teen comedy made its mark when it debuted in 1999. The father of Katarina “Kat” Stratford (Julia Stiles) and Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik), has one strict rule – Bianca can’t date until Kat starts dating. The problem? Kat is an antisocial, ill-tempered, tough girl, with shrewish-like qualities. New student Cameron James (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is smitten by Bianca. Forming a plan with new best friend Michael Eckman (David Krumholtz) in order to get around her father’s rule, they attempt to get bad boy Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) to date the infamous older sister Kat.
