It was the movie that brought a comic book to life. It was the movie that made you believe a man could fly. In 1978 we got the first major big-budget superhero feature film – Superman: The Movie.
Celebrating 40 years since its release, the Richard Donner directed Superman stars Christopher Reeve as the titular DC Comics character created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. With an ensemble cast which includes Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman, a score by John Williams, and being the most expensive film ever made at that point, Superman: The Movie is a huge genre defining film.
Superman: The Movie depicts Superman’s origin, including the destruction of Krypton and his youthful years in Smallville. The Kryptonian immigrant Kal-El adopts a mild-mannered disposition as reporter Clark Kent in Metropolis and develops a romance with Lois Lane (Margot Kidder), whilst battling Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) and his villainous real-estate plans. Donning a red and blue suit with a cape, Kal-El becomes Superman.
To help celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film, Rewind & Review have brought in That Film Stew’s Luke as a special guest.
