The dominoes continue to fall in the first week of the offseason for the Red Sox as the team and players begin making decisions on their options for the 2023 season. Eric Hosmer gives the Red Sox more clarity of his future as he opts into his 3 year, $39 million deal. Pitcher James Paxton also had his club option declined but has the ability to pick up a $4 million player option to stay with the team. Since the future of Xander Bogaerts is up in the air, Mark Feinsand reported that the Red Sox are beginning to look for options at 2B if Bogaerts does sign elsewhere and they do end up moving Trevor Story to shortstop.
Massachusetts Pirates Team Insider Jake Ignaszewski and NESN's Lauren Willand react to the news of Eric Hosmer opting into his deal and look at what this means for the first base position going into next season. Then they break down what's been happening regarding James Paxton's future with the team and explain whether they believe he'd be a good fit for the 2023 team. Lastly, Jake and Lauren look into the potential plan B options at second base if Xander Bogaerts decides to leave Boston.
