In the latest episode of the Sun Devil Source Report Podcast, publisher Chris Karpman and host Rob Werner are joined by staff reporters Jack Harris, Mason Kern, and Max Madden as they analyze Arizona State's 20-13 loss against Stanford. In evaluating the Sun Devils' (3-4, 1-3 Pac-12) fourth loss in their past five games, they begin the show by revisiting ASU's failed final drive of the game that began with 2:20 remaining in the game and ended with senior quarterback Manny Wilkins throwing a pass in the flat to sophomore running back Eno Benjamin with eight seconds left who was tackled in bounds. ASU couldn't get off a play after that as time expired. What happened on that drive that prevented Wilkins and the offense from taking a couple shots at a potential game-tying touchdown? Wilkins completed 26-of-43 passes for 353 yards, one rushing touchdown, one interception, and one fumble lost. The senior signal-caller didn't connect on some crucial plays, and couldn't lead the team into the end zone on its final drive. How did the crew evaluate Wilkins' performance in the losing effort? This was a game of missed opportunities for ASU as the Sun Devils turned the ball over three times, each time coming in Stanford territory. How much did these mistakes cost ASU? The Sun Devils got away from the ground-and-pound run game that head coach Herm Edwards has repeatedly said he wants to utilize as sophomore running back Eno Benjamin rushed only 11 times for 38 yards. Benjamin did catch five passes for 43 yards, but didn't have a carry after 6:59 in the third quarter. Why did ASU largely abandon the run game and why wasn't it more effective? The Danny Gonzales-led defense generated just one sack but did produce 12 tackles for loss and the unit only allowed 20 points. How well did the defense perform against Stanford? While the defense was able to stifle Stanford's run game allowing just 127 rush yards on 43 carries (3 yards per carry), critical penalties plagued the Sun Devils. ASU had seven total penalties for 76 yards, with each occurring on defense. How did these mistakes affect ASU's ability to keep the Cardinal off the board? They review how the Pac-12 did in Week 8 and how the conference has done this season before concluding the podcast with perspective on where the ASU program lies after seven games in the Herm Edwards' era.
