Cheers, beers, and high life! We’re so excited to share our live interview with Philly Martinez, the new head brewer at Ventura Coast Brewing Company. Philly shared his history in the industry, learning how to drink, collabing with beer friends, working for a big brewery, taking over at an established brewery, getting fired from Costco, and keeping grounded.

-

Philly shared five beers with us from VCBC: Doppelbock, Mystik Krewe Breux, Ex-Wizards, Extinction, and S’More of What.

-

We meet Philly’s parents and learn about his early days as a drinker, and how that fed his love for craft beer. He talks about his early days of brewing coffee and making other alcoholic beverages before getting a job at Modern Times. He also shares a piece of what it was like during the huge transition time his former brewery went through. That also leads to a very unique interview process at VCBC. He also talks about his jobs before brewing and the crazy stuff he got fired for.

-

We also learn about taking over an established brewery, the unique position of slowly taking over a tap board, and how to make old recipes shine again. Finally, he tells us about his upcoming collaborations and shares insight into his brewing process.

-

The listeners in the audience submit some great questions from Philly, and we wrap up the interview with a round of rapid-fire questions.

-

A huge thanks to Ventura Coast Brewing Company, Philly, Priya, Kyle, and the entire crew for having and hosting us. And to Geri of Daughters of Ninkasi for helping to arrange the event.
