You cannot study the character of the Joker without mentioning Pennywise, especially when It: Chapter 2 makes its debut a month before Joker hits theaters. So we could not resist a crossover episode between evil clown franchises. This works as a preview of It: Chapter 2, which we’ll review next week with a movie event pod. The episode also works as another level of The Joker Character Study because we give you the history of evil clowns in ALL media before comparing these most famous movie villains.
The format is simple. Joker revealed a new trailer, and of course, we weigh in on that, it’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival, and some first reactions from test screenings. Then we dive into the history of evil clowns by chronicling coulrophobia throughout the past few centuries of Edgar Allan Poe stories, operas, films & tv - as well as some real life examples in the cases of the 2016 Clown Sightings & serial killer, John Wayne Gacy.
We then cannot help but stage a battle between the Joker & Pennywise, and in wondrous fashion, we turn the segment into a Guess The Plot for a dream crossover film pitch. Finally, we enjoy a preview segment of It: Chapter 2. There are some red flags, but after a strong chapter one, we also have reasons to be optimistic.
Stay tuned for our continued coverage of both evil clowns. We’ll review Jack Nicholson’s Joker on next week’s installment of this character study, and we’ll be doing a movie event review of It: Chapter 2. Oscar Race Checkpoint & MMOW will continue to drop on a weekly basis as well, and we thank you for listening to those news & variety shows as much as you are.
