Our Parsha introduces us to our third and final forefather: Ya’akov Avinu. Even from birth, Ya’akov and Esav were polar opposites; the firstborn Esav was naturally red and hairy, while Ya’akov was small, and only managed to emerge because he grabbed Esav’s heel when he was leaving the womb. As the two grew older, the differences became more evident. Esav was a man of the field and an expert hunter, contrasting Ya’akov, who was a gentle and modest person. Esav also served idols and married women from Cana’an, while Ya’akov spent his time studying Torah and developing his relationship with Hashem. We find out why Yitzchak loved Esav and wanted to give him the blessings. We learn how to react in difficult and challenging situations, especially regarding children.
