As promised, we begin our weekly chat about the Oscar Race with this new format. In the intro, we map out how this series is gonna roll out in the coming weeks & months. For now, we have a ton of contemporary trailers, previews, & news to cover in this episode, and we plan to enjoy many more new segments in the future. But the bottom line - Mike & Mike are here to talk Oscars for you on a weekly basis.
This episode built into a whopper of a recording session. Per usual, we had way too much fun chatting up each topic, but we also had a ton of stuff to analyze, review, & preview. 13, count em, 13 Oscar Trailers premiered in the past two weeks since we held this segment on MMOW, and we had to react to them all. The Irishman failed to dazzle us with its VFX. Though we still hold out hope for Scorsese’s big budget Netflix contender. Then we rip off reviews of 12 more including new trailers like 1917 & the Lighthouse as well as major contenders like A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood & Harriet, and we can’t help but finish with a Top 5 of our favorite performances.
Then we have some hot takes previewing the upcoming Fall Film Festivals of New York, Toronto, and Venice. We discuss the competition lineups, some centerpiece and opening night films, and debate some seriously troubling news from overseas. There’s also some stats thrown in from previous festivals and how they related to previous Oscar Races for us to dissect.
Finally, we do a bit of a lightning round of reactions to a bunch of other Oscar-Related news stories and announcements. Many look ahead to Oscars 2021 & some compare the Emmy’s broadcast to what the Academy does. Then we also throw in a few movie reviews for good measure as Also Mike “Makes the Case” for why two movies he’s seen should be nominated for the Best Documentary and Best VFX categories respectively.
It’s a jam-packed episode of Oscar Race Update for you this 8/3. We hope you enjoy the new time slot of this MMOW segment into its own show. By the length of this one, you see why we felt compelled to spin it into its own presentation. But we want to know what you think. We’re at MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. You can subscribe / rate / review / like / share / & listen to us on iTunes, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Google Play, Tune In, Spotify, and just about wherever you listen to podcasts. When reality sucks, keep watching movies with us. We’re Mike, Mike, & Oscar!
