The Sears catalog democratized American commerce. In 1896 Congress passed the Rural Free Delivery Act, which opened up the Postal Service to all of America. Rural mom and pop shops did not want postal delivery because mail like the Sears catalog would arrive and could put them out of business. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has said to employees:

"One day, Amazon will fail but our job is to delay it as long as possible."

Bezos also said separately:

"Amazon is not too big to fail. In fact, I predict one day Amazon will fail. Amazon will go bankrupt. If you look at large companies, their lifespans tend to be 30-plus years, not a hundred-plus years."
