This chapter is a detour from the progress of the plot, and Melville delves into the study of marine mammal like dolphins and whales. Moby Dick was a commercial flop at the time, out of print by Melville's death, and only found it's reputation as a great American novel in the 20th century. Author D.H. Lawrence called it, "one of the strangest and most wonderful books in the world," and "the greatest book of the sea ever written."
