Karl Saint Lucy and I have traveled in many of the same NYC creative circles (and been friends – HELLO!) for long enough that it’s downright silly that Karl hasn’t been a guest on the podcast yet. The premiere of their brilliant song cycle, Different Stars, inspired me to correct that! We talk about the work itself, the challenges of producing a piece with multiple performers while under quarantine, and the magic that appears when you embrace those challenges. Karl Saint Lucy is a celebrated queer composer, countertenor, writer, pianist, music director, and livestream producer in New York City. Among their numerous credits are the musicals Fucking Identical Twins and Class. They are currently writing a memoir about their experience with events surrounding the 1990 murder of Elizabeth Mackintosh at Covenant Theological Seminary, in which Saint Lucy’s father is the prime suspect.
