Nomadland makes it 2 for 2 after winning the Golden Lion at Venice and now the Grolsch Audience Award at Toronto. So we open the show by discussing our reactions to the film’s early awards momentum before breaking down the historical crossover stats between the Academy & TIFF.
As for the majority of this episode, we’re all about the 72nd Emmy Awards. So we begin with some of the tallies, highlights, and main storylines from the Creative Arts Emmys. We then review all the highs and lows from the first virtual awards show broadcast of its kind. What made us laugh, cringe, jeer and cheer? As usual, we did all of the above.
The Emmys also showcased some history, and we recap all of the winners, losers, tallies, and stats that stuck out to us. There’s some fun to be had with a chat about how voting bodies may function in the time of covid, and we do wonder about any potential Academy fallout.
To end the show, we bookend things with another Box Office Update, which is certainly relevant after our latest episode entitled “Box Office Apocalypse.” So did we change any of our strong takes from a few days ago? Are there any more reasons for optimism? Or do we see trends that will unfortunately continue into the fall & winter seasons? Whatever happens, we’re not shy about expressing our thoughts & analysis.
So on that note, make sure to let us know your thoughts on the 2020 Emmys, TIFF, or the box office. We’re at MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. You can subscribe / rate / review / like / share / & hear us on Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Google Play, Tune In, Spotify, and just about wherever you might listen. We’re Mike, Mike, & Oscar, and we’re making awards season year round, without the stuffiness. Thanks for clicking play.
