When the investigation of the 1957 disappearances of Margaret and William Patterson finally began months after the couple was last seen, it was obvious from the get-go that the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office had lost access to evidence and information that would have proved invaluable. Instead, investigators were faced with trying to fit pieces together that didn’t necessarily belong to the same puzzle. The press was happily along for the sensational and highly speculative ride. Business associates of the Patterson’s seemed to be creating their own narrative as well, one that largely hung on the loose hinges of a poor explanation: that William and Margaret had taken an extended vacation and didn’t wish to disclose their whereabouts.
