President Emmanuel Macron's decision to call a snap election shocked the political landscape but comes in the wake of strong results for far-right win parties in the EU Parliament elections.

The first opinion poll released overnight shows the far-right National Rally (RN) led by Marine Le Pen is on track to take office Parliament. William Drozdiak says Macron is a risk taker, but this is  the "biggest gamble of his political career."
