Total abstinence from alcohol has little if any Biblical authority, and few now beat the drum for teetotalism or temperance. Nevertheless, But at a time when many thousands of people try to complete the Dry January challenge, there are some compelling reasons for moderating our drinking. Roy Jenkins talks to rugby coach Chris Jones, who gave up drinking 31 years ago; Mary Deller of the organisation Hope UK (the successor to the Band of Hope) who has pledged not to drink or partake of recreational drugs; student chaplain Rev Dr Emma Whittick; and to pastor Sean Stillman, who ministers to the biking community, and to Zak's Place, a church for the homeless in Swansea.
