Thousands of students across the country are receiving their ATAR results at the moment. For some it will be a cause for celebration, but for many others, it may be a source of disappointment, confusion, or despair.

But with declining university enrolments, a greater valuing of qualities beyond academic achievement, and the rise in technologies like generative AI, how much does the ATAR even matter anymore?
