Learn English Through Football Podcast: Happy Holidays It’s the holiday season and in this short message, languagecaster wishes everyone a happy holidays! We’ll be back in the new year – yes that’s 2019 just around the corner. Patreon – Support Learning English Through Football Transcript of the show (23rd December 2018) Introduction DF: You’re listening to languagecaster.com’s Learn English Through Football podcast! Hello everyone, my name’s Damon and I’m here to wish everyone a happy holiday season with Christmas and New Year coming up, not to mention all the other international festivals around the world, we’re taking a short break and will be back at the beginning of 2019. We’d like to thank all of you who have listened to our podcast, visited our site, liked our tweets, Instagram and Facebook posts, written in to comment, shared your messages and joined us on Patreon. As always, please let us know what you think by emailing us at admin@languagecaster.com. Now, before I go and pour myself a glass of nice red wine and eat some mince pies, I thought I’d take a quick look at the beginning of 2018 and Damian and my hopes for our teams – that’s Tottenham and Liverpool. We both wanted a bit of silverware, although Damian didn’t think this was that important, instead saying a top four finish would be a great achievement, but he did hope they’d go one better than the previous semi final appearance in the FA Cup. I was hoping for a good FA Cup Cup run but didn’t think Liverpool would do much in the Champions League. Well, neither Liverpool nor Tottenham won any silverware, although Liverpool proved me wrong by shining in Europe and making the finals after some incredible football – the quarter final legs against City were the highlights. Tottenham didn’t make the final of the FA Cup, that was Chelsea v Man United with the London side winning 1-0, but they did make the top four again, finishing above Liverpool and in third place. We’ll be looking at Tottenham and Liverpool and giving our mid-season reports again in January. It was also a World Cup year, the fourth languagecaster has covered. An exciting tournament won of course by France, who overcame surprise package Croatia in the final. That final appearance and an appearance in the Champions league final for Real Madrid saw Luka Modric pick up the Ballon D’Or in 2018. The Spanish side won the Champions League final for the third time in a row, beating Liverpool 3-1. They’ve also just won the Club World Cup too – so a good year for Real Madrid! Back to the ballon D’Or and the first prize for a woman in this competition was given to Ada Hegerberg, and it was a very good year all round for women’s football – more coverage, more women pundits on TV, and an all round higher profile. This is shown, for example, with the exciting race at the top of the Women’s Super League in England with Arsenal and Manchester City tied at the top. Of course lots more has happened in the football world and there’s a lot more to come, but for now, we’d like to wish everyone a happy, healthy and peaceful 2019 – and of course, enjoy all of the football!
