Submit ReviewNo LeBron James, no Anthony Davis, no Lonnie Walker IV, no Troy Brown Jr. in the second half... no problem for the Lakers. Behind 32 points from Dennis Schröder, the Lakers scored their most improbable win of the season, 112-109 over the Miami Heat at the Crypt. The Lakers played an incredibly gritty game, fighting off multiple pushes from a Heat squad playing basically at full strength.
The win, which steals one back for the Lakers from the pile of games they had no business losing, moves the team to 17-21, with the Hawks coming to town on Friday.
So the Lakers, after that 2-10 start, have gone a much more respectable 15-11. It's not a pace that would make the 73-win Warriors blush, but it's not nothing, either. Especially given the choppy health of the roster (most notably, an injured Anthony Davis). So is this team worth trying to rescue? Should Rob Pelinka go all in around the Davis/James core? Even if it costs every asset left in the cupboard?
We talk about this and more with John Nichols, aka LaJethro Jenkins, of the Jenkins and Jonez podcast, and Out of Pocket on WaveTV.
After discussing easily the most stunning win of the year, behind a gangbusters effort from Schröder, it's on to the paradox that is Russell Westbrook. While he was productive on Wednesday (18/8/9), Russ also had seven turnovers and was almost singlehandedly responsible for Miami's late first half run. So while he's found a niche this season with the Lakers, he's still a fascinating figure in the league. What happens next year? Is he now a sixth man going forward, the kind that will be sought after this season is over? Where does he fit? Could it even be... in LA?
