Submit ReviewKris Bryant. Kyle Schwarber. Michael Conforto. Nick Castellanos. Trevor Story. Seiya Suzuki. The Giants seem poised to end up with at least one of these big-name bats—but which one?
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick breaks down each of the six remaining big-name hitters that could make sense for the San Francisco Giants. Bryant is indeed a big name, but Ben thinks his general decline is a major concern, especially when Bryant's contract is predicted to be in the 6-7 year range for over $20 million per season.
Schwarber and Conforto make a lot of sense for the Giants, for different reasons. Schwarber is coming off a monster offensive season that looks sustainable. However, he's not a great defender and may be best suited for DH duties. Is that worth a multi-year commitment for $15M+? Conforto is coming off a down year and is looking to rebuild value; the Giants may seize the opportunity to buy low on a player who has been well-above-average for several years prior to 2021 and is still just 29 years old.
Castellanos is an impact bat but questionable defender, and Ben thinks his tendency to chase out of the zone will be a turnoff for this front office. The same can be said about Story, who also has a tendency to swing aggressively, but he is an elite runner who could potentially play center field well if he's willing to change positions. An elbow injury, however, is a concern. Suzuki may be the real prize, given his very modeset predicted contract and the potential to be an impact bat. Ben thinks Suzuki, Schwarber and Conforto represent the best potential fits for the SF Giants.
