Part Joker Character Study, part Oscars Sprint Profile - we have double the movie review for you here. Will this performance get nominated? Should Joker be nominated? We debate it all in our Oscar Lens. Plus, we compare this Joker to all the rest. (Usual Joker Character Study Sections in ALL CAPS) What is an Oscar Sprint Profile? - 1:00 NONSPOILER SECTION: Production Profile (Cast/Crew/Specs) - 1:27 GETTING INTO CHARACTER - 6:14 Plot Premise/Expectations - 13:43 Production Values: Sound - 19:36 Sight - 20:55 Performances: Ensemble - 23:55 Joaquin/HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - 26:56 Script Thoughts - 33:52 An Oscars Lens YOU CAN NOT MISS- 40:28 SPOILER WARNING DANCE PARTY - 50:56 SPOILER-FILLED REVIEW: HOW EVIL WERE THE DEEDS/Plot Rundown - 52:04 (WB Lies? - 59:54) Lowlights/Issues - 1:01:40 (Analyzing the Ending/Uncle Murray Issues - 1:07:58) (And What May Be The Best Scene of 2019 - 1:15:44) MOST MEMORABLE QUOTES OR ACTIONS/Bests - 1:11:52 WRAPPING UP: ON A SCALE OF 1 TO JOKER… - 1:17:35 How Will We Feel About This in 10 Years? - 1:20:40 Compass Talk + A Last Second Revelation - 1:21:53 FINAL GRADES - 1:23:05 Your Homework/PLEASE LEAVE US 5*’S - 1:24:44 What’s Next From MMO/Words of Wisdom - 1:25:41 The Joker Character Study has been built up to this with 7 previous episodes including those dedicated to Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill, Heath Ledger, and Jared Leto. We also enjoyed shows on the origins, history & timelines of the character and evil clowns (with a fun crossover with It Chapter Two). Our 2019/20 Oscar Sprint Profile playlist continues to build as well. We’ve already covered everything from Apollo 11 to Us to Endgame, Rocketman, The Farewell, Toy Story 4, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, etc. So the format for this episode needed to be large, & you get a lengthy discussion as a result. As always though, there’s a full non-spoiler section first. Here we go behind the scenes for a production profile & describe how Joaquin Phoenix got into character before reviewing the production values, performances, & script. We can’t help but compare this Joker to all the rest and discuss the historical significance in this litany of clown princes. Then to wrap up non-spoilers, we view this movie through that Oscar Lens. In spoilers, we dive into the plot straight away with a look at How Evil Were His Deeds then get into the other Worsts and Bests before ranking this character on a scale of 1 to Joker and giving this our final letter grades. But most importantly, and we do it in both sections, we must debate the film’s cultural impact in these trying times. So the discourse does get heavy at times.
