The majestic peak of Japan's Mount Fuji is covered in snow for most of year, and remains an enduring natural icon in Japanese culture and history, immortalised in countless artworks and revered in Shinto and Buddist traditions.

But after a sweltering Japanese summer which was the joint hottest on record, Mount Fuji remains completely bare of snow for the first time in 130 years.
