This is our 4th episode of The Joker Character Study. Episode 1 chronicled the history of the Joker character from his 1940 inception via the comics through all the movies, cartoons, & video games leading up to the Joaquin Phoenix portrayal coming this October 4th. Ep. 2 dove into Cesar Romero’s performance in Batman: The Movie of 1966, and for ep. 3, we did a crossover between the Joker & Pennywise, staging a fantasy fight and writing the plot for that dream crossover film. We also discussed the history of evil clowns in all of entertainment from Poltergeist to Rob Zombie & in real life with the 2016 Clown Sightings & John Wayne Gacy. Now we dive into 1989’s Batman and Jack Nicholson’s iconic turn as Jack Napier / the Joker.
Our format is fun & simple, and yes, there’s a non-spoiler section first before we dive into the plot in spoilers. To kick things off, we go behind the scenes to describe how Jack Nicholson got into character. Then we have perhaps too much fun with the historical significance of the performance and the movie at large.
In spoilers, we relive all of the most memorable quotes and actions before breaking down how evil was the deed, our section on the plots & traps & gags & laughs Jack’s Joker planned for Gotham & it’s Dark Knight. To finish, we debate on a scale of 1 to Joker, how Joker was Jack Nicholson?
