This is a podcast we think you’ll love. The Secret History of the Estonia is an eight-part documentary series investigating the mystery behind why a passenger ferry sank in the Baltic Sea in 1994 – going down in less than an hour, killing 852 people.

This was Europe’s worst peacetime shipping disaster since the Titanic, and many people remain convinced the truth behind the sinking has been covered-up.

To this day the wreck lies on the seabed; the bodies were never recovered as the authorities declared it a burial site. Laws were introduced to make it illegal to dive to the wreck and attempts were even made to bury it in rubble. This has raised the question of whether there’s something down there the authorities don’t want found.

Journalist Stephen Davis travelled to Sweden and Estonia for the series, to meet those at the centre of the story. Listeners will hear unbelievable eye-witness accounts from survivors of the sinking, heart-wrenching testimonies from victims’ families, and detailed inside-information from investigators who’ve been working on the case for years.

The investigation takes Stephen on a journey back to the Cold War, and to a world of secrets, spies and smuggling operations.
