Making movies can feel intimidating. One way to reduce that overwhelming feeling is by understanding there is a process which will guide you into believing in your idea. Coming up with an idea for your movie will lead you into creating the concept. You may need to go back to your idea as you develop your concept. But here’s the magic though. It’s while you are developing your concept that you may realize it’s not such a great idea! And isn’t it great to find out before you start writing a screenplay? Episode 113 of the “In The Weeds” series with Jason C. Marshall is a great conversation that brings us back to the origin of film and story development.

So don’t start writing your screenplay before you have your concept. Go back and get a new idea if you need to. If you write a screenplay and get lost in in the process and find yourself not finishing what you started, it doesn’t mean you failed. It could be that you didn’t first develop your concept. Jason and I discuss the difference between idea and concept and why conceptualizing your idea is so important to succeed. This series can help you make some incredible and memorable films!

The idea for making a movie comes sometimes as an epiphany. But if you begin to write a screenplay without first conceptualizing your idea, you may find yourself lost and unable to succeed with your story.
