In February, workers at Tasmania's Avebury Nickel Mine on the state's west coast were told the site was closing – just 17 months after it reopened. It's the 5th Australian mine to shut after a 50 per cent slump in global nickel prices.

And while the closure has hit the town hard, adventure tourism and a new season of ABC TV series Bay of Fires being filmed in the town are set to give the town a boost.
