So the confirmation that Hamilton will NOT be eligible for the Oscars dropped after we hit record on today’s Oscar Race Checkpoint. Though we both figured this was the case, the conversation does have some fun speculating about all the “what ifs. Plus, we have several side topics about how the Academy votes and what Broadway should do with its cinematic future that should make it enjoyable after the fact that the Academy pulled the rug out from this segment only a few days after Hamilton landed on Disney’s streamer.
This O.R.C. also pays tribute to Ennio Morricone before a discussion on the new Academy members, agents becoming voting members, and what it all means to how the Academy will head into the future. Then we dive into the new spread out awards calendar after the SAG’s announced their show date before enjoying a huge conversation about how the fall film festivals could and should take their programs virtual, where we talk San Sebastian, Sundance, and London formats.
Plus, we talk about the refreshing development that Hollywood is now putting big money behind film projects made by people of color as Apple set a record deal at Cannes for the Will Smith & Antione Fuqua movie, Emancipation, and when Paramount secured the rights to Lee Daniel’s upcoming Billie Holiday biopic.
